Far Cry 6

Following the official Far Cry 6 reveal in yesterday’s Ubisoft Forward, Giancarlo Esposito, who plays main antagonist Anton Castillo, has shared new details about his role.

Speaking to HypeBeast, Esposito discusses “doing multiple takes for multiple different endgames,” adding, “so the world is more complete now because you as a human being can make a decision in regard to what happens in regards to Anton Castillo. It’s a new world, and it’s a fabulous one to be in.”

The premise of the game is that Yara and its capital city Esperanza — described as “the most expansive Far Cry playground to date” and explained by Ubisoft’s Chris Watters as “the franchise’s first urban environment” — is oppressed by Anton’s dictatorship. Anton is also training his son, Diego, to take over after him. You’ll be playing as Dani Rojas, a local who joins the revolution to liberate Yara. Part of the game’s focus seems to revolve around Diego’s future role in Yara, and whether he accepts his father’s influence. Esposito’s comments could refer to decisions your character will have to make, not just about Anton’s fate, but about Diego’s future and the future of Yara.

Esposito added that this setting was one tempting aspect of the role. "When I heard of this particular character, in the beginning, I really thought, ‘Oh, a little island nation, a little African island nation that could be Latin America, that’d be a way to differentiate this character from anything I’ve played before.’” He discussed his character further in the interview embedded in the video above, saying, “Anton’s ability to lead is what drives him. His ability to create a better world for his people is what drives him.” He adds that “Anton is very smart at how he manipulates Diego… He has a saying, ‘truth or lies, truth or lies’, and truth is always going to be the winner, but is Anton always telling the truth?”

Far Cry 6 will launch on February 18th 2021 for Xbox Series X and Xbox One. Pre-orders are already available, and we’ve detailed the different Far Cry 6 pre-order editions if you’d like a look at those ahead of the release date.

Far Cry 6 has been officially revealed with a February 2021 release date

Ubisoft Forward has now given us the first proper look at Far Cry 6, following the leaks that cropped up earlier this week. The game will launch on February 18th 2021 for Xbox Series X and Xbox One.

These leaks cropped up across the internet earlier this week, describing a tropical setting, a free next-gen upgrade and Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito as a main character. As per these leaks, the game will be set in Yara, which is under oppression by the dictator Anton Castillo and his son, Diego, and the game’s new trailers give us a glimpse of Esposito as Castillo, with his son Diego.

The official description confirms that players will be “immersed in the adrenaline-filled, chaotic world of a modern-day guerrilla revolution. Welcome to Yara, a tropical paradise frozen in time. As dictator of Yara, Anton Castillo is intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory by any means, with his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps. Become a guerrilla fighter and burn their regime to the ground.”

You’ll be playing as “Dani Rojas, a local Yaran defending their country from a tyrant’s rule. Join the revolution to push back against the oppressive regime of dictator Anton Castillo and his teenage son Diego.” The game’s capital city, Esperanza, will be “the most expansive Far Cry playground to date.” You’ll have “an arsenal of unique and surprising new weapons, vehicles, and animal companions” including “Chorizo, the adorable wiener dog who’s as cute as he is lethal.”

Far Cry 6 will launch on February 18th 2021 for Xbox Series X and Xbox One. The game is already available to pre-order. The standard edition is priced at $59.99/£59.99. There’s also a Gold Edition, priced at $99.99/£84.99, which comes with the Discos Locos weapon and a skin for Chorizo, along with the Season Pass, which adds in three new DLCs and more. Lastly, there’s the Ultimate Edition, available for $119.99/£99.99, which also includes the Discos Locos weapon and a skin for Chorizo, as well as the Season Pass and its DLCs, and also the Jungle Expedition Pack, the Croc Hunter Pack, and the Vice Pack.

Far Cry 6 devs say the capital city gameplay “completely changes the way the game feels”

Far Cry 6 will be the first Far Cry game to have a capital city, and the devs say the verticality of this capital city is “a complete game-changer.”

The game’s main antagonist is Anton Castillo. Speaking on the Ubisoft blog, narrative director Navid Khavari says Yara’s capital city “is the seat of Antón’s power,” and that “on a narrative side, you want to feel like you’re walking into the lion’s den,” while “on the gameplay side, the verticality is a complete game-changer. Being able to run across rooftops, use back alleys, fight against some of the toughest opponents in the game in this setting… it completely changes the way the game feels.” Khavari also says that the capital city is where most of Anton’s supporters can be found: it seems these “toughest opponents” will be made up of Anton’s most powerful followers.

Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Castillo, previously said that the setting was one tempting aspect of the role. Khavari elaborates on the choice of Yara as the setting, noting how keen fans were for a return to a tropical setting, as well as the desire to “look at somewhere players have never been before in the series. And finally, we wanted to tell a story about revolution, and when you tell a story about revolution, you’re talking about guerrilla warfare. When you’re talking about guerrilla warfare, you go to Cuba.” This was the “jumping-off point” for Yara. The game’s official description paints Yara as a tropical paradise “frozen in time”, and Khavari again elaborates on this. Yara has been isolated for about half a century, been plunged into “an economic downturn”, and elected Castillo on the idea that he would “rebuild paradise.” As a result, Yara will be “like a living postcard from the ‘60s that players can experience and walk through… with the vintage cars, the picturesque landscapes, the mountains, the water, the capital city”, contrasted with “the overwhelming oppression that is Antón Castillo.”

We also get some extra detail on Castillo’s background, and what drove him to rule Yara with such force. According to Khavari, Castillo saw his own father, who was also in a position of power, being executed, “and that really shaped his worldview and his belief that this island was stolen from him, stolen from his family.” Like Yara, Castillo is also made up of contrasts: “how do you take someone who is charismatic, intelligent, who would otherwise be doing amazing good things, and put them in a situation where their worldview gets distorted? Fast-forward 50 years later, and they’re able to justify doing horrific things with a weird, pervasive, twisted logic.”

Interestingly, Khavari describes the full trailer we saw during Ubisoft Forward as “separate” from the game, more of a prequel for what’s to come: “it sort of tees up the story in the game, so there’s going to be a lot more moments where he’s passing down lessons to Diego of how he thinks Diego will have to someday rule.”

Ubisoft Forward gave us our first proper look at Far Cry 6, and we’ll be sure to update you when we hear more. The game will launch on February 18th 2021 for Xbox Series X and Xbox One, and pre-orders are already available.

Far Cry 6 to showcase gameplay in tomorrow’s reveal event

It’s almost time to get our first look at Far Cry 6 gameplay, with Ubisoft having scheduled a worldwide reveal event for tomorrow, May 28th. Check out the teaser trailer here:

It’s been a while since we’ve had any substantial news on the next instalment of the Far Cry series, but that changes tomorrow with our first proper look at gameplay footage. The reveal event is scheduled for May 28th at 9:30am PT / 12:30pm ET / 5:30pm BST / 6:30pm CEST, and can be watched either on YouTube or Twitch.

Aside from the teaser trailer’s focus on the game’s main antagonist, Anton Castillo (played by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito), we don’t have too much info on what sort of gameplay we’ll be seeing tomorrow. Far Cry 6 is an open-world first-person shooter set in Yara, which is under the oppressive regime of dictator Anton Castillo, who’s training his son Diego to follow in his footsteps. We’ll be playing as Dani Rojas, a Yaran attempting to defend their country against Castillo.

Far Cry 6 is heading to Xbox on October 7th and features a free upgrade for owners of the Xbox Series X|S consoles. Players will travel to the tropical paradise of Yara in the Caribbean and embark on a journey full of the weird and wonderful encounters the series has become known for.

Finally, after much anticipation, we can say that Far Cry 6 has an official release date, which allows us to excitedly wait for October 7th to roll around. This time we’ll be heading to Yara, a tropical island in the Caribbean that’s been frozen in time and ruled by a dictator (Giancarlo Esposito), we’ll need to load up on as many weapons as we can find to take this ruler down. Weapons include sensible options, such as homing missile-throwing backpacks and motorcycle engine-powered miniguns… yes, you heard that correctly. It’s like you put your arsenal together in the Grinch’s cave, duct-taping trash together to make any unconventional item imaginable. While not travelling on foot, wielding weapons of trash destruction, you’ll be able to explore the world in ways that haven’t previously featured in the series, from horses to tanks and DIY vehicles. Honestly, none of this comes as any surprise to us, and we just hope to cause as much damage as possible when the game launches.

Companions will be making a return, so taking on a tyrannical ruler doesn’t need to be a solo affair. Plus, the game can be fully experienced in co-op so you can double up on the madness as you explore jungles and decaying cities. Grab a friend, get in there and cause some mayhem!
