This week in Japan, a new pro basketball league is getting underway, and tonight’s game between Alvark Tokyo and the Ryukyu Golden Kings is being played on an LED court. It’s nuts.
The court for the inaugural B. League game at Yoyogi National Gymnasium is covered with LED light panels. A few years back, Nike created an LED court in China, but according to Kyodo News, the B. League says this is the first of its kind to be used in professional league play.
This is not projection, but actual screens. It makes everything look kind of like, well, video games.
My thoughts:
I know here we use light projected down on the courts and can do some amazing stuff but actually playing on a court of lights is pretty interesting.
That’s awesome and they stole my idea. My kids and I were at some basketball tournament and thought of e-ink style courts. This way they can program in Basketball Courts, Volleyball courts and what not so there’s not a million lines on the floor.
The concept is awesome, but not necessarily new. There has been talks about doing something similar with roadways for a few years now. I think playing on it would take some time to get used to, and if anything were to go wrong during gameplay, you could have issues esp if there is a game winning to tying shot and the court goes on the fritz.
It would never get down to my level of coaching at high school but I would love it just for the lines on the court. Some schools we travel to have a million different lines on the court so I have to point out to my players which ones are for us.
