Modern Warfare Warzone Updates and News

According to a new rumor from gaming website VGC News, they are indicating that “development sources” have informed them that Call of Duty: Warzone is set to release in early March.

Per their article, Warzone is set to be released around Tuesday, March 10. This information and date is not confirmed at the time of this writing.

VGC states their sources tell them that Warzone has been a co-developed project between Infinity Ward and Raven Software, which lines up with many information around the web over the last few months and information that has been mentioned to CharlieIntel.

The report notes that the mode will be unlocked for Modern Warfare owners on the launch day in early March. Per VGC, the company will also then release a free to play standalone version of Warzone with the option to upgrade to the full Modern Warfare experience.

This information is not officially confirmed by Activision at this time. The company has not even acknowledged Warzone as a mode yet, with many information on the mode coming out via leaks and information through data mining of the game’s files.

VGC states that Warzone will support up to 200 players, which matches what we’ve seen too from in-game files.

Update: Industry insider Daniel Ahmad has retweeted VGC’s tweet of the Warzone release happening in early March. Ahmad is well connected in the gaming industry and has accurately leaked information on the gaming industry, including Call of Duty info in the past.

I wonder if Warzone will be cross play enabled or not.

Activision and Infinity Ward have officially announced Call of Duty: Warzone following all of the rumors and speculation over the last few weeks. We had a chance to visit Infinity Ward a few weeks back to get a first look at the game and go hands on with at the studio.

The new Call of Duty experience will be available starting March 10 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

And yes, Call of Duty: Warzone is free to play. For everyone. No purchase of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is required to play this game.

Call of Duty: Warzone features two modes to play: Plunder and Battle Royale.

Warzone features a massive map that is pieced together with the Ground War and Special Ops locations from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and is similar to what has been leaked through game files the past few months.

If you are someone who currently owns Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the Classified tab will be updated to be Warzone mode. If you are someone who does not own Modern Warfare, there will be a separate download for free to get Call of Duty: Warzone on your platform’s store starting Tuesday, March 10. Information on the release schedule is here.

This is Activision’s first free to play experience for consoles and PC. Call of Duty ventured into free to play in October 2019 with Call of Duty: Mobile, which has been extremely successful for the company. Now, they’re hoping they can replicate that success on consoles and PC with Call of Duty: Warzone.

Call of Duty: Warzone is a co-developed game between Infinity Ward and Raven Software and published by Activision.

Call of Duty: Warzone shares unified progression with Modern Warfare

A big thing of Call of Duty: Warzone is that it will share progression with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for those who own Modern Warfare.

What that means is the Battle Pass progress will be available in Call of Duty: Warzone, alongside all unlocks that you have as the Warzone is a new tab in the Modern Warfare menu.

For those downloading Warzone separately, it’s still the same content. There will be the same Battle Pass Seasons between Warzone and Modern Warfare, and the same Item Shop for both games.

Players who own both Warzone and Modern Warfare will have access to some additional cosmetic content not available for free to play Warzone players like the Season 1 Battle Pass items, Season 1 Item Shop items, and other content that gets unlocked via MP or Spec Ops.

Infinity Ward noted to us that cosmetic differences will remain between Modern Warfare and free to play Warzone users. There is no game play advantages between the versions, only cosmetic.

What this means is that when Warzone goes live on March 10, those who are free to play players will be jumping in the middle of Season 2 Battle Pass for the game. Those who own Modern Warfare will have their same Battle Pass progression in Warzone accessible.

Call of Duty Points will transfer between games, so you can continue to purchase items from the shop and more if you have Call of Duty Points.

Call of Duty: Warzone features 150 players

Call of Duty: Warzone features one of the higher player counts in any Battle Royale mode so far. The game features 150 players.

Rumors for Call of Duty: Warzone and game files suggested there would be 200 players in the mode, but Infinity Ward confirmed during our visit that they have 150 player lobbies for Call of Duty: Warzone as that’s the number that is working best for the mode overall.

They want to focus on player experience versus hitting a higher number, so they’re set to launch with support for 150 players in Warzone in both Battle Royale and Plunder.

150 players works well in this large map in Warzone, which is a lot bigger than Black Ops 4’s Blackout map, which had around 100 player matches.

And with 150 players, there really is no screen taring or FPS drops experienced from our play testing session at the studio on a PlayStation 4 Pro, while Blackout did experience those. This seems to be the fact that the game I built on a new engine compared to Black Ops 4’s Blackout which offers better optimization overall for the game.

Whether Infinity Ward decides to adjust the player counts to higher numbers or lower is up in the air, as the studio said they would monitor player feedback to see how they should adjust and how the matches are feeling.

Call of Duty: Warzone does not have private match support at launch

It sucks for Community Nights…

Infinity Ward has noted that Call of Duty: Warzone does not have support for private matches, although that’s not entirely out of the question.

The studio confirmed during our visit that they have not implemented private match support for Call of Duty: Warzone for fans who may have wanted to try out custom games on the large map.

The studio, however, did not fully rule out the possiblity saying it could be something they look at down the line.

One of the things for players to learn Warzone is the second mode called Plunder, which allows players to have a more relaxed experience compared to Battle Royale as Plunder is respawn enabled and let’s players respawning as long as the match is going on.

If private match support does come to Warzone, we will be sure to keep you updated. Stay tuned.

Call of Duty: Warzone features the Gulag, the 1v1 Respawn system

The Gulag is one of the most interesting additions to Call of Duty: Warzone and is unique to Call of Duty Battle Royale.

Gulag is the 1v1 system to respawn into the match if you die.

After you first death in the Battle Royale, IF the Gulag is still open, then you are transported as a Prisoner of War to the Gulag. Depending on how many players are in the Gulag, you may be asked to wait your turn as only one 1v1 match happens at time.

While waiting, you can actually watch the matches in the Gulag from the top of the ring and throw rocks down at the 1v1 fighters. Being able to watch matches helps if you have another squad mate in the Gulag as you can communicate to them where the enemy is to win their 1v1.

You only get once chance in the Gulag. If you lose the 1v1 battle, then you must be bought back into the match through a teammate ‘purchasing’ you at a Buy Station for $4500 cash.

Warzone lets players have an unique way of getting back into the action with Gulag, and from our experience, it was a lot of fun to get into those 1v1 situations to respawn. It’s gives you the control for one change to get back into the action without relying on your squad, but if you fail, it’s up to your squad to win.

And if your teammates are collecting and going for cash throughout the match, it is not that difficult to get back in through Buy Back. It just depends how much Cash you can find during the match.

Loadout Drops in Call of Duty: Warzone Explained

Call of Duty: Warzone features Loadout Drops that land in on the play – almost care package style – thought the game as the match occurs.

A unique aspect of Call of Duty: Warzone is that players can set their 10 Loadouts in the menu prior to the start of the match. The menu tells you how each Perk works in Warzone vs standard multiplayer. You can create your class out fully here in the Loadout editor.

The Loadout Drops that come in to the match randomly – care package style and marked clearly on the map for everyone to see – lets you then walk to the loadout drop and select any of your 10 set loadout slots. Once you select the loadout you want, your current kit will be replaced with the loadout you selected – weapons, equipment, perks, and all.

The challenge here is that you are fully exposed accessing loadout drops and unable to shoot until you pick your class and then get the gear equipped. It’s a trade off – whether you want to get it or not go for it.

When playing at Infinity Ward, I found it strategic to use these Loadout Drops when you respawn back in. This way, you can land straight on a loadout drop (if one’s on the map), get a fully equipped kit, and jump back into the action without spending too much time finding gear and looting around the map.

Call of Duty: Warzone standard mode is Trios

The standard mode and player per team in Call of Duty: Warzone is trios.

Infinity Ward opted for trios for how the gameplay works in Call of Duty: Warzone and how large the map is. There’s 50 teams of 3 for a total of 150 players.

And trios is the only mode available in Call of Duty: Warzone. Infinity Ward does not have solos or duos options in game at launch. The reasoning for this is to ensure quality matchmaking and not separating matchmaking into many different pools with so many options or combinations of team styles.

Players can opt to play on their own or with a duo through Squad Fill settings, but they will be competing against standard trio teams in the same matchmaking pool.

Call of Duty: Warzone Armor + Health Regeneration System Explained

Let’s talk about the Armor and Health Regeneration system in Call of Duty: Warzone, which is very different compared to other Battle Royale games, including Blackout.

Call of Duty: Warzone features Armor system, but it is very different than Black Ops 4’s Blackout. There is no tiers of armors. There is one standard armor: the Armor Plate. Every single player enters the map with 100 heaxlth + 2 armor plates equipped.

Players can have max of 3 armor plates on their character. With all 3 armor plates equipped, players have 250 health total. The Armor Plate is one single rarity and there is no variations of it.

Warzone features automatic health regeneration, allowing players to get their health back automatically. So, there’s no bandages or med-kits in Warzone. However, there is the Stim Shot to use in Call of Duty: Warzone that is rare to find.

Infinity Ward says they wanted to have automatic health regeneration because they wanted this to be a Call of Duty Battle Royale that keeps players in the action all the time. You don’t have to stop and sit and bandage up now. When you get hit, you can get to cover for a couple of seconds and jump back in the action without having to worry about bandages.

The Gas in Call of Duty: Warzone closes in quite fast and aggressively. With auto health regen, there’s a way to avoid damage in the gas: the gas mask. Players can find the Gas Mask around the map, and when it’s in your inventory, your character automatically places it on when you’re in the gas. It has its own health levels as well.

Call of Duty: Warzone – Contracts Explained

Call of Duty: Warzone features different Contracts as a way for players to earn more Cash, alongside earning XP, weapon XP, and more information in regards to the game.

Contracts can be located around the map in a tablet pick up that then assigns you to a certain task to complete. The tasks can vary based on the contract you do end up finding.

The reward for completing contracts differs based upon what contract you find. Some contracts will let you have additional XP, weapon XP, earn cash, show you a preview of the next circle. There’s even a contract, according to Infinity Ward, that lets you see the final circle within the first 10 minutes of the match if you find and execute the specific contract.

There’s also a second type of Contracts called Bounties. These are specific targeted contracts. If you find a bounty contract, it’s all about finding and taking out a certain player who is randomly chosen for that bounty. If you pick up a Bounty contract, it will show you the bounty enemy’s relative location to go hunt them down.

And if you’re on the opposite side of the contract, you will get an alert on your screen that there’s an active Bounty Contract on your player. Your entire squad gets alerted when one player on your team has an active bounty on them.

Call of Duty: Warzone features a ping system similar to Apex Legends

Call of Duty: Warzone has a cool ping system similar to that of Apex Legends, which allows players to ping almost every thing in the map and alert teammates of possible items.

The map in Call of Duty: Warzone lets you zoom in as close as you want and then press Up on the D-Pad (on PlayStation 4) to then ping items, Buy Stations, vehicles, locations, and more.

The ping system is extremely useful especially when playing with teammates that don’t have microphones.

You can easily ping any thing you see for teammates to pick up — weapons that you spot while looting, Buy Stations, vehicles, and more to easily find items. When you walk near a weapon, pressing UP on the d-pad will ping it for anyone on your squad to see and get to.

Everything you need to know about Call of Duty: Warzone Plunder Mode

Battle Royale is not the only mode available in Call of Duty: Warzone. There’s a second mode called Plunder, which Infinity Ward wants to be the fun side experience for those who want a more casual experience compared to the intensities of Battle Royale games.

Plunder is all about the team who secures the most Cash in game.

Here’s how the mode works:

The objective of Plunder is to go around the map and find as much cash as possible to accumulate a total of $1 million in cash.

In this mode, the amount of cash you can find is dramatically increased compared to Battle Royale.

Plunder has a 30 minute timer for players to reach $1 million in cash. When a team reaches $1 million in Cash secured, an overtime phase is triggered in the mode. The team that deposited the $1 million in Cash has their $1 million secured. During this overtime phase, the amount of Cash you find is doubled. The team with the most cash when the time ends wins the match.

If no one reaches $1 million in Cash by the 30 minute mark, the team with the most money secures the win.

A very important aspect for this mode is that respawn is fully enabled. If you die, there’s a 15 second timer, and once that’s up, you can sent back to redeploy onto the map to get back into the action. There is no Gulag in this mode.

In addition, players have their own create a class loadouts to use in Plunder mode in Call of Duty: Warzone. You spawn back in with your create a class loadout in this mode.

Players also will drop their Cash when they die. There’s a certain amount of Cash you will drop when you die, so if you have too much on you, it’s a risk to stay in the open. But, players can secure their Cash and deposit them in one of two ways:

The first is through specially marked Helicopter pads that are located around the map. At these pads, you have to run up to them, press a button to activate the pad, and wait for a chopper to arrive. When the chopper arrives, you can then deposit the cash you have on you — that cash is then secured and cannot be taken away. But, there’s a huge risk with these helicopter deposits — there’s no cover around them at all, and you can be shot while attempting to deposit.

The second way is through Deposit Balloons that can be found at certain Buy Stations throughout the map that you have to use the Cash to buy. But there’s a catch with these portable deposit: it can only take a deposit of up to $150,000. The chopper deposits does not have the limit.

Call of Duty: Warzone Cash System – Buy Stations, Killstreaks, And More

Call of Duty: Warzone has an in-game currency system that is revolved around Cash system that lets players access new content in Warzone.

The cash system is fully in-game only and not impacted or part of any microtransaction system.

Players enter every match with $0 in cash to their name. As you begin to loot and find weapons, equipment, and more, you also will find Cash around the map in various quantities. The cash stack you see will be smaller for lower amounts of cash and larger for higher amounts of cash.

The entire game really revolves around this cash as it allows you to get equipment and items from Buy Stations located around the map.

BUY STATIONS:

Buy Stations are located in various locations around the entire map and are easy to see on your map. And with the advanced ping system in Warzone, you can easily mark a close by Buy Station for you and your teams to see to get too when needed.

Buy Stations let you use your cash to purchase certain items like Killstreaks. Players cannot earn killstreaks the standard way they’re used to in multiplayer. You have to buy streaks (or, very rarely find while looting).

Players can only carry one killstreak at a time. If you purchase more than one, it will only let you take one, so your teammate will have to hold the other.

Here’s a look at what you can get from Buy Stations, and note the prices may changed based on feedback. One thing you can also get from these stations is the ability to buy back your teammates if they’ve failed to get through the Gulag or the Gulag has expired.

Here’s what you can purchase:

The amount of Cash you can find and earn is quite balanced from our play testing experience. You don’t find too much, and you have to be strategic about how you spend your cash — whether to save it up for killstreaks or to save it to buy a possible downed teammate.

You can also share Cash between teammates by dropping the cash you have. On PS4/Xbox, press down on the D-Pad, and then use the right trigger stick to highlight cash, and drop stacks. Your teammates can then pick up the stacks if you want to pool it together to get a certain killstreak in-game.

KILLSTREAKS

Yes, Call of Duty: Warzone does feature Killstreaks. As we noted above, buying from Buy Stations or very rarely finding on map is the only way to get these and not all killstreaks from MP are carried over to Warzone mode.

There’s a variety of options available when it comes to killstreaks and some operate very similar to that in MP. There is a UAV streak, but the UAV streak is a very small circle that pings enemies in the radius nearby you for a set time. It does not show the entire map, only the small area near you and your team.

Call of Duty: Warzone Looting Explained

Call of Duty: Warzone has a very simplified and unique looting system compared to Black Ops 4’s Blackout.

There is no backpack/carry pack, and it feels more in line with a fast paced Call of Duty action versus a traditional Battle Royale experience that you might expect.

What you can carry is also simple, really too. You have two weapons to hold. One lethal equipment. One tactical equipment.

You have an inventory management system that is accessed by pressing DOWN on the D-Pad. It’s not a complicated inventory management that was there in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout, with extensive management of what you can hold and can’t hold.

One of the best features that Warzone has compared to Blackout is the ability to pick up ammo by just walking over it in looting situations. And because you don’t have a set limit of ammo you can carry, there’s no worrying about managing your ammo in your inventory.

Call of Duty: Warzone features cross play and cross progression similar to Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Warzone continues the staple features introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with full support for cross play in the game between PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Players can play up with any of their friends across all platforms similar to Modern Warfare. And similar to Modern Warfare, for those looking to jump into Warzone without owning Modern Warfare, you will need an Activision ID and account in order to play as that’s how cross play works in the Call of Duty franchise.

Players who own Modern Warfare and play Warzone will be in the same matchmaking pool as those who are free to play Warzone owners – there’s no separation, Infinity Ward confirmed to us during our studio visit.
