Need help making point to son...

I was in the industry because I grew up in it and was talented. It wasn’t my passion. Really most anything consider a job I am not passionate about. I am passionate about fishing and sitting on my ass playing video games. I love Mike Rowe and pretty much agree with him on everything.

Hes going to have to find his own way. You know hes not going to be a full time gamer. Thats your lifetime of real world experience telling you. Its tough and yes you and your wife spent a shit ton of money on his education but most of us learn and grow through failure.

Can’t he Part-Time on Twitch to see if it’s even feasible? I guess I don’t see why he can’t keep his job and stream after he’s done work. It costs him nothing and he can see if he truly wants to do this. Just pick a few nights and put in a few hours a pop (try to make the nights consistent).

He’ll also see if he can build an audience.

And I’m old and out of touch. I’ll never understand why people want to watch others game. Don’t even bother trying to explain it to me. I’m too far gone. Get off my lawn!

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Had a lengthy discussion with him earlier in the weekend and verified his head is on straight (thank God). He understands it’s a pipe dream and that, while work sucks now because of the hours, short staff, etc., it’s the nature of the beast so - and I guess I was overly blunt - suck it up. Also helped when I corrected his misinformation on the number of followers to even apply for Twitch Partner - he thought it was 50, not 500 (of which even the lower number he’s nowhere close).

TL;DR - all is well, crisis averted.

Yah know what would be feasible. @Lala_Calamari made me think of this. If he has friends who do this sort of stuff, or if he knows people… get into a streaming consortium. A channel that has multiple streaming hosts. A lot of people use that sort of platform to get their feet wet and at least try to start a dedicated following.
I know he’s looking at streaming games and such, but you know he may have a better chance with a more niche audience. Like, say… taking that culinary degree and finding some hole (if there is one) in the “how to” cooking channels online and do an online cooking show as his main draw for SEO and unique views/searches and then have like section of the channel dedicated to live game streams too…

Maybe he could be The Video Game chef… preparing all of the most legendary dishes from all of your favorite video games.

Episode #1: The Sweet Roll
Episode #2: Chef’s Salty Chocolate Balls

… you know… it’s not like anyone has ever done that be… DOH!

A cooking show on twitch IRL may help him build his channel faster then he can gaming. Then he could switch to gaming and will probably keep most of his followers if he is entertaining. I watch a guy do blacksmithing all the time and he doesn’t even speak to his viewers half the time.

Oh I completely agree. I barely watch Let’s Play streamers anymore. There’s a guy who codes on there live who I watch all the time, and a few other non-pc or game related IRL style streams that I find really interesting. And I like that if I miss a live stream, most of the Twitch streamers archive to Youtube.

When I talked with him, I gave him the idea of merging gaming with the cooking. Only issue he’d have is he just rents a room with another dude, so setting up a filming studio around the kitchen would be tough. But who knows…maybe he’ll latch onto the idea…

LOL… yea… lesson #1 everything about streaming is inconvenient and robs you of any expectation of privacy… and EVERYONE AROUND YOU… That’s doesn’t matter if you are Let’s Play Twitch Streaming or cooking while talking to your live chat. If it’s too intrusive to do this in the Kitchen, then being on the bedroom probably would only be moderately better…
And god forbid he ever develops a following.
god forbid.
He will have given away all expectation of privacy… all.

Well… @BalekFekete … there is a sure fire way for your son to get a major leg up on the competition if he wants a serious stream following…

Get a sex change (or at least a good cross-dress job)… Let him know that if he’s really serious about streaming he’d dress up like a girl with a big rack, and show off the twins.

I mean… how dedicated is he?
Just look at this chick’s All-Cooking Channel on Twitch… it works.

He should use an easy bake oven. Viewers galore.

@anon36214017 relocate that filming from the US to the Phillipines and change the streaming channel from Twitch to Pornhub, and I think we may be on to something…

Can we get some investors?
