Any Golfers On Here?

Just wondering if anybody here played golf? I have played off and on since college. Mostly off. For the past 14 or 15 years I have been the golf coach at my high school. Sadly, the only time I really play is during the season because I play for free.

My oldest son has been swinging a club since he could stand. His grandfather got him hooked and started taking him all the time. When he passed away five years ago, he quit playing. We would go once or twice a year.

He is going into eighth grade next year and has been begging me to go lately. He wants to play in high school. He has outgrown the last set of clubs I had bought him. I took him to the driving range the other day to see if he could hit my clubs. The little shit was killing it. He was out hitting me. Now granted, distance has never been my thing, but it’s embarrassing when your thirteen year old is out hitting you.

I am really out of the loop on clubs. I’m hitting a Taylormade R5 if that tells you anything. I need a good set of clubs for the boy that won’t break the bank. Something a couple of years old but not ancient. Easy to hit. I know, you are saying that I’m the golf coach, I should know these things. I’m the golf coach that doesn’t follow golf.

I’ve been golfing since i was about 7. My grandfather thought me and I love the game… Sadly I’ve not been able to go out that much lately. However, there are a lot of good clubs out there. But depending on his style of play would determine what clubs I’d get him. You can find some older sets on eBay fairly inexpensive. I prefer Callaway clubs (VFTs) mizuno makes some nice clubs as well as ping.

Whatever club heads you decide on, I’d suggest taking him to a pro shop and let him try out some different clubs also see about getting them sized to his build.
He won’t need professional tournament clubs. But the worst thing you can do is get him clubs you think he will grow into. It will encourage improper technique and mess with his swing as he gets older.

He just hit puberty but he is only 5’5". I’m 6’ and his mother is 5’8" so he will grow some more. He swings my Cobras pretty well. I signed him up for some lessons with a local pro so I’m hoping he can tell me what length he needs. One of my Golfers here at school has a set of Callaway X-14s he will sell me for $40. Not sure how old the X-14s are. Like I said, I don’t follow golf stuff much.

40 bucks is an unbeatable deal for some Callaway clubs.
