That’s what Polygon’s sources claim. Polygon is reporting that Treyarch won’t include a single player campaign in Black Ops 4, siting issues with getting the game out by release date.
The sources, who asked for anonymity, said that as Black Ops 4’s release date approached, it became evident that development on the single-player campaign wouldn’t be completed. One source said Treyarch has since focused Black Ops 4’s development on expanding multiplayer and the series’ popular Zombies mode. The source described an emphasis on cooperative modes as a potential stand-in for the typical single-player campaign experience.
Aren’t these games supposed to be on a 3 year development cycle?
I know this is a cynical take, but maybe they will add it as DLC later on and make everyone pay for it. It wouldn’t surprise me.
To be honest, I know COD is still hugely popular, with WWII being played heavily by some of the folks here. But COD in general has just lost that lovin feeling for me. I bought WWII (first COD game I’ve bought since MW3) in the hopes that I would jump back in and it would rekindle all the warm and fuzzies I had. Take me back to the days when I loved this franchise. Focusing on COOP or Zombies just isn’t enough. I get that COD lives by its multiplayer, but I personally don’t care for COD MP anymore. But not having a single player campaign makes the value proposition even lower for me. I think COD needs a serious break and a serious overhaul to even get me to turn my head again.
We’ve been talking about it on Discord, but I think the reason they can’t seem to complete development on single player campaign is because they’re shoehorning a battle royale mode into the game.
Oh…look here…seems maybe the Battle Royale rumor has legs. From Destructoid (with link to origin of rumor at CharlieIntel)
However, there’s another rumor running adjacent to Polygon’s piece. Call of Duty enthusiast site CharlieIntel says its sources have revealed that Activision has tasked subsidiary Raven Software with developing a battle royale mode. The idea is that an emphasis on additional multiplayer modes will placate consumers who feel that a campaign-less Call of Duty is a lesser product.
(For those who don’t know: Raven Software has worked with Infinity Ward on Ghosts, the remaster of Modern Warfare, and China’s COD Online game…which just added a Battle Royale mode)
It would be interesting to see how COD would implement the Battle Royale mode, given that COD is typically known for smaller maps and players in a match. But I suppose that if there’s even one lonely nickel to be scraped up by putting it in, publishers like Activision/EA froth at the mouth unable to resist the temptation to shoehorn something in to every game. Looking forward to Need 4 Speed - Demolition Royale… haha
Interesting. CharlieIntel’s Twitter says a tipster has told them Activision found the campaign “too outlandish”. Not sure how it can be more outlandish than wall running and jetpacks.
A tipster told us that Activision thought Black Ops 4’s campaign was ‘too outlandish’ and decided to cancel it, Treyarch focus is on MP and Zombies https://t.co/TNBWiUf9Ca

AND THUS BEGINS A THREAD EXPLAINING THE LEAKS IN DEPTH WITH MUCH MORE CLARITY!
I'll also be sending this direct to certain YouTubers. First come first serve if you wanna make videos off the back of this stuff. pic.twitter.com/4Ghedljj55
I am actually glad they did this. Now I know 100% that I don’t want the game. Knowing how I am I would have bought it for the campaign and the 2 or 3 times I would play MP. Now I have no reason to get it.
