Black Ops Cold War engine gets revamp to give modern take on 1980s

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings the franchise to the next-generation of consoles when it launches in November.

Raven Software’s technical team discussed during our virtual briefing what the team is doing to make the game look and play incredibly well.

Engine

First off, Treyarch’s Dan Bunting says that they are not fully using Modern Warfare’s engine for Black Ops Cold War. Infinity Ward debuted a brand new engine with Modern Warfare that was in the works for years, which dramatically transformed Call of Duty’s graphics.

Treyarch says that while the teams share the ‘underlying technology,’ the engine and technology being used in Black Ops Cold War was created back in 2015. Bunting says that the team worked hard to revamp and re-build a lot of their tools starting with Black Ops 3, and Black Ops Cold War showcases the power of what they were able to do. It’s important to focus on making tools and specific functionality versus a whole engine, and that’s where they focused.

The tool set built with this game was intended to be scalable and broad to work on future platforms, including PS5 and Xbox Series X. The teams are sharing tools, but there is new stuff in Black Ops Cold War.

Black Ops Cold War tool set

Raven’s Lighting Director Alberto Noti spoke during the briefing as to how the team worked to bring the 1980s to life in Black Ops Cold War. Noti says that the team pushed to make the game ‘visually stunning’ and ‘push Call of Duty visual boundaries.’

The team was able to create photorealistic visual experience with the next-generation tools to bring this game to life. They wanted to make sure they could capture the essence of the 1980s. And, the teams did that through building vintage aesthetics through modern tools.

The game features the latest display and next-gen technology, supporting 4K and HDR across the board. Black Ops Cold War was designed to be a ‘modern’ looking game that was ‘visually sharp’ but also ‘era appropriate environment.’

In designing the lighting, the teams had to target. Showcase and use photorealism to bring the 1980s style to life, and use real time lighting technology.

Raven and Treyarch identified color pallets for the different places players will travel through in the game. Examples shown to use included a teal color look for Berlin location, and a pink, purple, and red combination for the 1980s vibes. They added in 1980s props to highlight through the lighting technology.

The teams also built Real Time Lighting technology to be able to adjust the lighting in locations in real time during development. This unlocked the team to showcase precise shadows in each area that realistically matched the location. In a clip shown, they showcased how the lighting team is able to go in and update the look and feel of locations in real time and in render.

Raven’s Lighting Director says the teams pushed the ‘limits of the engine’ to make the ‘most realistic adventure’ in the Black Ops saga. Engine was ‘vastly improved’ over the last few years to build on the next-generation. It’s a next-gen experience and ‘lives and breathes’ the 1980s feel.

The last piece Raven Software shared on this was the volumetric and how the fogs/effects are displayed in game. With this game, light rays are no longer invisible. Fog will be able to showcase and be more immersive throughout the entire game’s journey.

Black Ops Cold War campaign has multiple endings

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign has multiple endings.

Players have a ton of choice during the campaign experience – from how they play certain missions to the voice lines they pick during different parts of the missions.

The campaign also offers mission choices, which allows players to choose how to play and interact with certain missions. Some missions can be played in different ways – stealth, run and gun, and more, while others will be more linear overall. The narrative seasons also have player choice options.

There are a few side missions for players to experience as well. These side missions start off locked, but as you experience the main campaign, you continue to reveal the side missions. You can collect additional evidence from side missions.

And all of these decisions will influence the campaign’s ending. This is not the first time a Black Ops game has had multiple endings, but the amount of player choice available in Black Ops Cold War is vastly different than past experiences.

The endings are dictated by how you as character play the entire campaign. There are missions where you select how to play it: stealth option, run and gun into the action, and more as the mission progresses. And those decisions are vital in building the overall story you’re playing.

Raven says that each of the different endings are “special endings” and the team “love how these have turned out.” The Creative Director says that the endings will “feel uniquely Black Ops.”

This also leads to replay-ability for the campaign for fans who want to experience the alternate endings throughout the story.

Black Ops Cold War will feature cross play, free DLC, & Battle Pass

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will follow Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s feature set in providing fans with a joint experience.

Black Ops Cold War will feature cross play with all platforms – PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. Players will be able to play with their friends regardless of platforms. And similar to Modern Warfare, player progression will transfer between all platforms.

Black Ops Cold War will feature cross generation crossplay support, with cross progression for all players to play together. The title features cross-play support across current and next generation systems with cross progression across all modes.

In addition, the company has announced that there is no Season Pass for Black Ops Cold War. All post launch MP map DLC will be free. Activision confirms a steady stream of content for MP, Zombies, and more to come throughout the post launch seasons.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will also offer a Battle Pass system and deliver a steady stream of free post-launch content, including multiplayer maps and modes, Zombies experiences along with a robust schedule of in-game community events.

And, the Battle Pass system introduced In Modern Warfare will return in Black Ops Cold War. Activision announced changes to monetization in their games with Modern Warfare in 2019, eliminating loot boxes in favor of a Battle Pass system.

Fans who order the Ultimate Edition of Black Ops Cold War will get Season 1’s Battle Pass Bundle when available.

Black Ops Cold War campaign lets you create your own character

In a first for Call of Duty, the Black Ops Cold War campaign will let you create your own character to play as through the experience.

The Create your Character menu will let fans create the character’s gender, name, identity, back story, and more. Players will create a CIA dossier for themselves, and can redact or un-redact parts of the history they want to while building the character.

How you shape the gender of the character affects the voice over as well for your own dialogue lines.

You can also pick your place of birth and develop a background for your character. Raven has confirmed that there are no gameplay advantages or bonuses of selecting characters in certain ways.

This is a pure cosmetic play to give players more choice of their gameplay in the campaign.

This is a first for Call of Duty, being able to design your own character in the campaign, and it’s an important decision by Raven Software.

Players will be prompted to create and design their character when they load into the Black Ops Cold War campaign menu.

Black Ops Cold War Land, Sea, & Air Pack revealed

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Ultimate Edition, which costs $89.99, includes bonus content, including the Land, Sea, and Air Pack.

Now, the content for this pack has been confirmed.

Land Themed Pack

Whether you call it the “motherland” or the “homeland,” these three items will help clean house of any hostile forces.

  • Operator Skin – Ground infantry with bandolier and mesh face camouflage.
  • Weapon Blueprint – “Sucker Punch” Shotgun – A sawed off-stock and shorter barrel more than mitigates the weight of shells taped to the side, with the weapon’s simple appearance allowing it to blend into most non-tundra engagement environments.
  • Vehicle Skin “Red Bear” – The colorful blue hue seems a little worn, but the bright red star on the side will made this a standout tank among a platoon.

Sea Themed Pack

Suit up for operations at sea to maneuver behind enemy lines.

  • Operator Skin – Special operations wetsuit.
  • Weapon Blueprint “Black Tide” Assault Rifle – Chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges, the Black Tide’s a gold standard for any Operator, a fitting label for a blueprint that features subtle, yet intricate, gold accents.
  • Vehicle Skin “Leviathan” Skin– A striking zebra-like pattern is only broken up by necessary accessories, including its classy seafaring trim and decals.

Air Themed Pack

Be a maverick and prepare for take-off with this pack – its contents allow any Operator with ace flying skills to also look the part.

  • Operator Skin – Airborne division operator flightsuit.
  • Weapon Blueprint “Wingman” Pistol – Like any good co-pilot or emergency parachute, this reliable sidearm can be phenomenal in a pinch, and comes with a design that includes a signature fin flash insignia and checkered muzzle.
  • Vehicle Skin “Death Dealer” Skin – This hulking beast of a chopper forgoes the more extreme checkered pattern seen on a Blueprint and Operator Skin for yellow markings on a blue-painted base, with a devilish bomb-dropping caricature plastered on for a dark comedic effect.

The “Land, Sea, and Air Pack” is a robust nine-item bundle containing three Operator skins, three vehicle skins, and three developer-crafted weapon blueprints to confront the enemy across three domains of warfare. Use these items to help you master deniable operations in the field and pose a threat to your enemy no matter where the battle takes you.

Based off of this, it appears to confirm that Operators are returning in Black Ops Cold War. Warzone first introduced vehicle skins, now this game will continue with additional skins for vehicles.

The Land, Sea, & Air Pack is included with the Black Ops Cold War Ultimate Edition, which is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
