Call of Duty "Vanguard" Rumours, Leaks and Info

Call of Duty: Vanguard title

There is a rumor from ModernWarzone that the working title for the 2021 Call of Duty is ‘ Vanguard.’ This title adds credibility to the potential of this being a World War game, as Vanguard is the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force.

While ModernWarzone believes this title may be changed in the future, Eurogamer “understands Activision’s current plan is to stick with the Vanguard subtitle for the final version.”

There has been no official word from Activision yet, and plans could certainly change in the future.

A new report by Video Games Chronicle on June 9, 2021, has also reported that this year’s game will be called Call of Duty: Vanguard.

CoD: Vanguard setting and time period

One rumor suggests that the 2021 game will be set during the World War II era again, and Eurogamer reported that this will be true.

ModernWarzone claimed that CoD: Vanguard would be an alternate history version of WWII set in the 1950s. However, Eurogamer’s sources disputed this information, saying it would be a “traditional WW2 setting.”

We should get more teasers for the game in the coming months. Leaks, as always, will be tough to decipher, with plenty of community members posting fake leaks for each new CoD game.

A June 9, 2021 report by Video Games Chronicle stated that the setting for Call of Duty: Vanguard will be in both the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II. The reported plot will focus on the birth of modern allied special forces and will feature Campaign, Zombies, and Multiplayer modes.

Which studio is developing CoD: Vanguard ?

In Activision’s Q4 earnings call, they confirmed that a new Call of Duty game would be releasing in 2021, with Sledgehammer Games in charge of development.

Sledgehammer released Call of Duty: WWII in 2017 but faced difficulties after their co-founders and many team members left. However, Sledgehammer hired over 150 new people to the studio in 2020 and recently opened a new studio in Toronto.

Activision said that “Development is being led by Sledgehammer Games, and the game is looking great and on track for its fall release.”

CoD: Vanguard release date

Call of Duty games traditionally release in November. However, Modern Warfare and Black Ops 4 were both released in October. Ideally, Call of Duty targets the first Friday of every November, as we saw for CoD WW2 and Infinite Warfare releases.

The Friday tradition started with Black Ops 3, where games before saw releases on the first Tuesday of November. Below you can read some of the recent Call of Duty releases.

  • Advanced Warfare: November 4, 2014
  • Black Ops III: November 6, 2015
  • Infinite Warfare: November 4, 2016
  • WWII: November 3, 2017
  • Black Ops 4: October 12, 2018
  • Modern Warfare: October 25, 2019
  • Black Ops Cold War: November 13, 2020

We could expect this year’s Call of Duty game to release on either the first or second Friday of November 2021. That gives us a possible date of either the 5th or 12th of November.

Call of Duty: Vanguard reveal date

There is still no confirmation on when Vanguard will be officially revealed, however by looking at Black Ops Cold War’s announcement, we can hazard a guess. For the first time in Call of Duty history, the next game was revealed in an in-game live event.

All signs point towards Vanguard being revealed inside Warzone, with a recent leak suggesting the Vanguard will be revealed during Season 4. On June 9, 2021, Video Games Chronicle also reported on the idea that Call of Duty: Vanguard will be revealed through an in-game event in Warzone and that it will have a November release date.

Activision’s president confirmed in a recent interview that their games could be released “later in the year” than before, and VGC also said that Call of Duty will be skipping E3.

With this information and Cold War’s reveal last year, it’s likely that Call of Duty: Vanguard will be revealed in July or August 2021.

What engine will Call of Duty: Vanguard run on?

One of the biggest talking points when discussing Black Ops Cold War and Warzone is the engine. Infinity Ward brought an entirely new, more realistic-feeling engine with Modern Warfare and Warzone, while Cold War used an updated version of the Black Ops 3 engine with a more classic CoD feel.

With players often switching between Cold War and Warzone, the engine shift can feel jarring, so fans are keen to find out which engine CoD: Vanguard will run on.

A report by VGC claims that 2021’s Call of Duty will be on Modern Warfare’s engine. This means the game will likely have the same feel as MW and Warzone and will run similarly, boasting the same improvements to realism and performance.

Activision has also said that “the game is “being built” for next-generation consoles & PC,” but there’s no confirmation if the game will also release for the Xbox One and PS4.

However, VGC reported on June 9, 2021, that Call of Duty: Vanguard is being developed for current and last generation consoles and PC.

Will Call of Duty: Vanguard integrate with Warzone?

Black Ops Cold War integrated with Warzone at its first season, bringing across Operators, weapons, and even Zombies.

Activision has stated that they intend to keep Warzone at the ‘front and center’ of Call of Duty for a long time. In the Q4 investor call, Activision confirmed that CoD 2021 is *“*designed to both integrate with and enhance the existing COD ecosystem.”

While the game will most likely share weapons and progression, it’s uncertain if the integration will go any deeper. WW2 is a vastly different setting from Cold War, especially Modern Warfare, so developers will face challenges in fully integrating these time periods.

And as for a new map, VGC’s sources also say that this will be “uncertain” because of “scheduling issues and shift in setting.” There could be a potential revamp in the first half of 2022, similar to Verdansk ’84, or perhaps there won’t be a new map until after CoD 2022 releases.

However, a June 9, 2021 report by VGC states that the integration between Warzone and Call of Duty: Vanguard will be very extensive thanks to Sledgehammer Games having more time to prepare for it. This integration will see Warzone transition to a World War II setting following its transition to the 1980s in Season 3 of Black Ops Cold War.

This setting transition will see a new Pacific Theater World War II Warzone map be the main focus, as it will reportedly be the largest map the Call of Duty battle royale has ever seen. This new Warzone map will also reportedly feature new vehicles for players to use.

Call of Duty: Vanguard’s rumored Warzone map could see the size of lobbies increased, according to renowned data miner Tom Henderson.

Tom Henderson has struck again, but not with information about Battlefield 2042, this time he’s revealed that Warzone’s new World War map is set to resemble Battlefield V’s Firestorm game mode, but with more players.

Battlefield’s take on battle royale only had room for 64 players, and it’s expected that Warzone’s version of the mode will probably up this significantly to match the usual Warzone lobby numbers.

In an interesting Tweet, Tom described what he believes is happening to the new map saying “The more I hear about the Pacific-themed Warzone map, the more I like it.

“It sounds like it’s going to be a lot like Firestorm with limited destruction, more vehicle play, and more players. They are definitely changing the formula to keep people playing.”

As well as the message, he also attached some images to it, perhaps an indicator of the kind of vehicles and setup we can expect in the new map.

If this all turns out to be true, then it would be a very interesting approach to Warzone. Firestorm was well-liked, but microtransactions and a lukewarm response to Battlefield V as a whole meant that the player count, and interest, was already low by the time it rolled out.

His words should be taken with a pinch of salt like with any leak, but his leaks regarding Battlefield 2042 basically all turned out to be true. His drawings of the robot combat dogs were accurate and he also said that the game wouldn’t launch with a campaign.

Activision are yet to officially reveal Call of Duty 2021, but we know it’s being developed by Sledgehammer Games and is reportedly titled “Call of Duty: Vanguard.” VGC recently reported that Vanguard and Warzone will integrate at launch, bringing a WWII-themed Warzone map set in the Pacific.

Now, notable leaker Tom Henderson, who revealed a ton of accurate details about Battlefield 2042, has leaked more information surrounding Vanguard.

Here’s everything Tom Henderson said about Vanguard’s WWII-themed Warzone map.

Massive new Warzone map with Vanguard’s launch

While VGC originally broke the news, Tom Henderson has also heard that this WWII Warzone map will launch alongside Vanguard. Cold War integrated with Warzone a month after launch, and it wasn’t until the game’s third season that the battle royale map received a major overhaul.

Rather than another overhaul, Vanguard is allegedly set to bring its own map set in the Pacific, which is significantly larger than Verdansk. This isn’t to incorporate more players, but to “introduce more unique ways to play Warzone.” This matches his previous report that the new Warzone map will be “Firestorm with more players.”

Vanguard to bring new Warzone vehicles

In describing these new gameplay experiences, Henderson said that the WWII-themed map will bring new vehicles. Warzone recently saw Armored Trucks and the new Dirt Bike, but Vanguard is said to bring “planes, tanks, and boats.”

A tank is sure to significantly change CoD’s battle royale experience, but he has heard that the potentially game-breaking vehicles will likely be reserved for LTMs.

Vanguard Warzone map to feature destructible environments

Brand-new to Call of Duty, Henderson has also reported that the Vanguard map will feature “destructible environments.”

Rather than featuring Battlefield’s full-on destruction, Henderson said that it will resemble Rainbow Six Siege, where you’re able to destroy walls, doors, trees, and other parts of the environment. This could significantly up Warzone’s pace, as there will likely be far fewer safe places to hide.

Battleship POI

Vanguard’s Warzone map POIs have reportedly leaked online, but Henderson said that the list of locations might be out of date now. He’s heard that areas such as Docks have been changed and instead, a massive Japanese battleship will be featured on the map.

Vanguard is expected to be revealed inside Warzone in a similar fashion to Black Ops Cold War,

The official Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 key art was posted by Activision on August 3, confirming in an initial leak on the key art. Now, players have spotted the key art has teasers for Call of Duty 2021, with Japanese text on the side of the image.

It looks like we now have our first teaser for Call of Duty: Vanguard, as Activision gets closer to announcing the new title from Sledgehammer Games.

The Season 5 key art shared by Activision, shown below, reveals a first look at the new Operator for Call of Duty: Warzone & Black Ops Cold War Season 5.

Fans have now found that (via @EricMaynardII) the image appears to have teasers for Call of Duty 2021.

On the right side, there’s Japanese text written, as you can see below. Season 5 story around Warzone & Cold War is expected to include Japan-based elements.

Putting that text through Google Translate, it translates into “Vanguard is coming.”

This now confirms that Call of Duty 2021’s title is in fact Call of Duty: Vanguard, which was rumored to be the game’s title for a while now.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is expected to be revealed via Call of Duty: Warzone during Season 5, most likely during the month of August.

The game is expected to take place during WWII era and will feature a brand new Warzone map that is centered around the Pacific theater of WWII.

New Warzone map reportedly arriving with Vanguard

This setting transition will see a new Pacific Theater World War II Warzone map be the main focus, as it will reportedly be the largest map the Call of Duty battle royale has ever seen. This new Warzone map will also reportedly feature new vehicles for players to use.

Notable leaker and industry insider Tom Henderson has now leaked even more details about this new Warzone map. He reported that the map will arrive with Vanguard’s release, and it’ll be significantly larger than Verdansk.

Henderson clarified that he’s heard the new vehicles will be tanks, boats, and planes. But, the more game-breaking vehicles will likely be reserved for an LTM.

The map’s POIs reportedly leaked online, but Henderson believes these may now be out of date. He’s heard that the Docks location may now be scrapped, and a Japanese battleship will feature on the map.

Also, this map is said to feature destructible environments in a similar fashion to Rainbow Six Siege. It won’t feature Battlefield level destruction, but you’ll be able to destroy walls, doors, trees, and other aspects of the environment.

Call of Duty: Vanguard to feature 20 multiplayer maps at launch

During an early press briefing for Vanguard, Reisdorf revealed that gameplay was a major focus for the team as it developed its multiplayer mode, and as part of that, 20 maps will drop on launch day for players to enjoy.

16 of these maps will be for the game’s core multiplayer mode, taking place in locations across the world including Europe, North Africa, and the Soviet Union as featured in the game’s campaign.

The other four maps are designed for Vanguard’s new Champion Hill mode, a mix of “battle royale with Gunfight-style” gameplay that was also announced by Sledgehammer.

16 regular multiplayer maps is a huge increase compared to previous titles, with Black Ops Cold War launching in 2020 with just 8 in comparison. In fact, you would need to go all the way back to 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 to find the last game that launched with as many.

Information on the maps themselves, such as what they look like or where they are set, remains to be confirmed, but players will have plenty of choices when CoD: Vanguard launches November 5, 2021 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

CoD: Vanguard Zombies mode developed by Treyarch; continues Cold War story

Zombies are officially returning in Call of Duty: Vanguard, but fans are in for a surprise as Sledgehammer Games’ studio head has confirmed that Treyarch is leading the development of the mode.

Call of Duty: Vanguard’s third mode is confirmed to be Zombies, and fans of the Black Ops series interpretation of the undead will be excited to hear that Treyarch are once again running point on it this year.

Vanguard’s Zombies mode will be included with any edition of Call of Duty: Vanguard. Players who want to experience the Zombies mode will have to purchase Vanguard.

Sledgehammer Games’ Studio Head Aaron Halon confirmed during a press briefing that Vanguard’s Zombies is a prologue to Cold War’s mode, and will act as a continuation of the Dark Aether storyline

This will be the first time in franchise history that the development of a co-op mode will be continued by the same developer year to year. In years past, the co-op modes have switched development studios, even if the mode was Zombies.

It’s a significant shift for Activision and the development team. This means that Sledgehammer Games’ team has been focused exclusively on the Campaign and Multiplayer modes of Call of Duty: Vanguard. How it affects Treyarch’s future development pipeline is yet to be seen.

Sledgehammer Games’ 2017 Call of Duty: WWII had its own Zombies mode that was led by their own team and had its own story. With Vanguard’s Zombies being Dark Aether related, there will be no follow-up to the CoD WWII’s Zombies mode or story.

Black Ops Cold War has so far had 3 maps, one at launch, plus two DLC maps, alongside the launch of the open-world Outbreak mode.

Treyarch recently confirmed that there’s another Zombies map in development for Black Ops Cold War, but a release date for the map has not been announced.

Gunsmith returns to CoD: Vanguard with two new features

Sledgehammer Games have confirmed that the series’ popular Gunsmith feature is returning in Call of Duty: Vanguard, with two new options to allow even greater customization: Custom ballistics and ammo types.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is set to be one of the biggest CoD titles ever released, with a huge campaign, 20 multiplayer maps, and a new Warzone battle royale map all set to launch before the end of 2021.

One of the most impressive things about CoD in recent years is the customization offered to players. From how they play, to what their character looks like, and even to how the guns themselves look, players can finetune their game to suit their style perfectly.

One of the in-game features that allow players to do this is Gunsmith, which Sledgehammer Games Multiplayer Creative Director Greg Reisdorf confirmed will return in Vanguard with two new options.

Gunsmith first appeared all the way back in Black Ops III, but has featured more prominently in Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War.

The feature allows players to customize and build out their weapons with incredible precision, selecting multiple attachments and optics to create the perfect version of any gun.

With the feature appearing in the last two games, alongside Warzone, it’s not a huge surprise that it’s returning in Vanguard. However, there has been a significant update to Gunsmith, with custom ballistics and ammo types available to be selected, giving more customization options than ever before.

How these will affect weapon performance remains to be seen, but it’s likely that different ammo types will deal more damage in certain scenarios. For example, some ammo types may deal more damage to vehicles, but perhaps be less effective against human players.

Unfortunately, full details on how ammo types and custom ballistics haven’t been released just yet, but with Vanguard set to launch on November 5, it’s likely that we’ll find out more about it over the coming weeks and months.

CoD Vanguard to run on Modern Warfare & Warzone engine

Sledgehammer Games have confirmed that they have been working closely with the Infinity Ward & Activision core tech team to expand the Modern Warfare engine to support and scale for the world of Vanguard.

Their tech team confirmed that Modern Warfare’s engine makes the foundation of what Vanguard is running on, but the team has put in work to expand it to better support for the next-gen PS5 & Xbox Series X / S consoles, and to bring the World War II era to life.

The teams have worked to integrate new visual fidelity technology to create a photo-realistic world, in both Vanguard’s campaign and multiplayer modes.

Some aspects of the engine have been adapted from the world of Black Ops, bringing some of the terrain-based tools featured in recent Black Ops titles in the Modern Warfare engine.

The Sledgehammer Games team also worked to introduce a new damage layer system to the engine, which allows surfaces to accumulate damage and persist over the course of games.

This is all part of the new destructible environment features in Vanguard’s multiplayer mode, allowing players to destroy objects and create new lines of sight during a match.

Another major benefit of Vanguard running the same engine as Modern Warfare is how it will integrate with Warzone. Sledgehammer Games’ studio head, Aaron Halon, confirmed that the integration will be seamless across the Operator and weapon balance play because of the same technology.

This is a change from 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, which runs on a separate, Treyarch engine that is vastly different in core ways from Warzone’s engine.

CoD Vanguard multiplayer introduces new ‘Combat Pacing’ gameplay options

While full details on Vanguard’s multiplayer experience are still to be announced by Activision and Sledgehammer, the first details on new features have been confirmed.

As part of the multiplayer experience, Sledgehammer Games is introducing new ways to play in the Vanguard world.

The new way to play is called Combat Pacing. Players are able to select Combat Pacing within the filters in MP, allowing players to pick between three different pacing options: Tactical, Standard, and Blitz.

Tactical play is similar to that of the Hardcore experience of past Call of Duty games. Tactical increases the time to combat with intense experiences where every bullet matters. The games are described as “sweaty matches,” per Sledgehammer‘s MP Creative Director Greg Reisdorf.

The second one is Standard, which is the regular multiplayer experience that players have known and experienced in past Call of Duty games.

The third way to play is called Blitz. This is much more casual, but super high-action gameplay. This combat pacing packs as many players as possible into a single map that can fit within the size of the square meters of each map. It’s described as “pure chaos and fun.”

Reisdorf says that these new pacing methods will offer a “huge variety of experiences.” Of course, if classic multiplayer isn’t your thing, Vanguard’s Zombies mode has been developed by Treyarch, while Warzone will receive a new map and anti-cheat.

Players will be able to try Vanguard multiplayer as part of the Open Beta coming up soon, with the full game set to drop on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on November 5.

New Warzone map and anti-cheat confirmed for CoD: Vanguard

Sledgehammer Games have confirmed that Warzone will receive a brand-new map along with an ant-cheat system to coincide with the integration of Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Since its release in 2020, Warzone has cemented itself as the king of the battle royale, dominating Twitch and YouTube for over a year. Despite its incredible popularity, fans have asked for changes to the game, specifically aimed at the map selection and lack of anti-cheat.

These prayers are set to be answered later this year, with Sledgehammer Games Studio Head Aaron Halon confirming to CharlieINTEL that a new map and anti-cheat are coming later this year during an early preview event for Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Raven Software will be leading the development of the new Warzone content.

New Warzone map confirmed

Verdansk has been home to Warzone for 17 months and is the only proper battle royale map in the game. While Rebirth Island was added to give players another option, it’s smaller than the original map and doesn’t feature as many players dropping in.

Verdansk did receive an update to match Black Ops Cold War, taking the map back to how it would have looked in 1984, but players were largely disappointed to remain in the same location and had hoped for a completely revamped map.

Finally, that is set to happen with the launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard, with Halon confirming that Warzone players would move to a brand-new map “later this year,” seemingly confirming that it will drop before 2022. Whether it will drop as soon as Vanguard releases remains unknown.

Warzone anti-cheat

On top of a new map, Halon also confirmed that a new anti-cheat is also coming to Warzone, as the teams who develop Call of Duty work to rid the game of cheaters.

Hackers have become a huge area of contention for fans of the game, and while Raven Software have banned around 650,000 accounts, the cries for an improved anti-cheat system have been growing louder as time goes on.

Whether Warzone will use a custom-built system or use existing anti-cheat systems like Fortnite and Apex Legends’ Easy Anti-Cheat has yet to be confirmed.

Along with these major features, Halon says Warzone will share the same tech as Vanguard to ensure “seamless weapon integration and operator play balance,” and will also connect to both Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War too.

On top of all that, there will also be an extensive calendar of free post-launch content, although a roadmap for the release of this has yet to be confirmed.

Call of Duty: Vanguard Create A Class and Gunsmith

An evolved form of the popular Gunsmith system from Modern Warfare will be one of the main focuses of the Call of Duty: Vanguard Create A Class ecosystem. A total of 10 attachments will be available in the Call of Duty: Vanguard Create A Class Gunsmith including a new Caliber option.

An example of the new Caliber option for the Vanguard Gunsmith is that Shotguns can now be outfitted with a Buck Slug. This Buck Slug “is a shell filled with short-range buckshot and a slug round for longer range,” according to the Call of Duty Blog.

In a major change from Black Ops Cold War, there will be no wildcards available for players to equip and use in the Call of Duty: Vanguard Create A Class system.

Most of the core aspects of the fan-favorite Call of Duty system will remain the same in Call of Duty: Vanguard Create A Class, as players will be able to equip a primary weapon, secondary weapon, lethal equipment, tactical equipment, and perks.

Here’s every weapon confirmed to appear in Call of Duty: Vanguard:

Classic World at War maps coming to Vanguard

In a blog post on the official Call of Duty website, more information was given about Vanguard’s multiplayer experience. Including information about two classic World at War maps making a return in Vanguard.

The maps returning are Castle and Dome. Seeing how World at War was also set in WWII, it makes sense they would be included. However, there will be significant changes made to these maps to fit Vanguard’s playstyle better.

The blog states, “There will be maps coming to the full game that are love letters to those who enjoyed Call of Duty®: World at War.” Castle and Dome will be reworked to include destructible environments and new graphical details.

Both Castle and Dome are two of 20 Multiplayer maps that will be available when Vanguard launches on November 5. Sixteen maps are reserved for traditional multiplayer, while four are for the new Champion Hill game mode.

Call of Duty: Vanguard console FOV Slider

Taking to his Twitter account, Adam Iscove, Senior Development Director at Sledgehammer Games, posted an image of the new Call of Duty’s settings page, which showed off a Vanguard console FOV Slider.

This official confirmation of a Console FOV slider was met with a great deal of excitement and joy from the community, as a major complaint from the game’s Alpha was the fact that it did not have a FOV Slider for consoles, which was met with disappointment as Black Ops Cold War had one.

With the addition of cross-play in Modern Warfare that has now carried over to Warzone, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard, console players have been very vocal over their desire to have a FOV Slider like their PC counterparts.

Luckily, now they will be able to customize their field of view exactly how they want when they jump into the adrenaline-fueled action of the newest Call of Duty game.

Even though Open Beta will not have a FOV Slider for consoles, it has now been fortunately confirmed that there will indeed be a Console FOV Slider when the next entry in the fan-favorite franchise launches on November 5, 2021.
