In just a few weeks, (8 days actually) the next DLC expansion will drop for Destiny 2. Warmind, as it’s titled, will introduce a new mode, which is the closest thing the Destiny franchise has ever had to a traditional horde mode, called Hive Escalation Protocol. Inside that new event, there is an Easter egg that harkens all the way back to the Destiny 1 Beta.
Destiny subreddit moderator and a community member who took part in the recent Destiny 2 Community Summit at Bungie, FuzzleHC, posted the video showing the Easter egg:
For those who may not recognize the in-joke there, it is a reference to the infamous line of dialogue, “That Wizard came from the moon,” which was spoken by the Ghost character – originally voiced by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage – all the way back in the Destiny 1 Beta. Back then, the line garnered a flurry of criticism for being poorly written, goofy, and/or just plain bad. It led to Bungie removing the line completely before Destiny 1 launched and became a meme among veteran Destiny fans.
With the release of The Taken King expansion a year after the release of vanilla Destiny, it was announced that Peter Dinklage was being replaced as the voice of Ghost. Nolan North of Uncharted fame took up the mantle of Ghost, and has been the voice of the Guardian’s companion ever since.
This isn’t the first time Bungie has made a nod to the “That Wizard came from the moon” line. In Destiny‘s Year 3 Age of Triumph event, the developers worked the dialogue back into the game during a version of the very mission it was first spoken; letting the original Dinklage line play before North’s Ghost voice clears his throat.
This Easter egg in Destiny 2 is a small, funny acknowledgment to longtime fans that, to be honest, the game should probably be doing more of considering its nearly four-year history. Hopefully, this is a sign of similar things to come.
