Hogwarts Legacy Info and News (updated)

Ever since shaky footage of a Harry Potter game leaked in 2018, and probably some time before, fans have been hoping for a Harry Potter RPG: something to let you experience life at Hogwarts, magic classes, Quidditch; the works. For a while, it seemed this idea was held aloft by nothing more than wishful thinking, but after yesterday’s PS5 showcase, it’s finally been confirmed: Hogwarts Legacy, a Harry Potter RPG, is launching in 2021 for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One consoles. Take a look at the trailer below:

There were a few theories about this game before it was announced: that it would be set either in the 1800s, or that it would take place after the Potter and Weasley kids had left. The first proved true: Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player action RPG set in the 1800s. The trailer showed a lot of the Hogwarts activities fans had hoped for, including Potions, Herbology, Quidditch, duelling, going to Hogsmeade, and more, but it looks like there’s a fair few new things to do. There’s a shot of two students riding what look like Hippogriffs over a new location, and a few creatures that look like they might have come from the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise. A press release adds that you can also head to the Forbidden Forest.

You’ll be able to customise your character and upgrade talents, and according to the game’s site, you’re a late arrival to Hogwarts and “soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic. Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.” The description adds that “your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart… Discover the feeling of living at Hogwarts as you make allies, battle Dark wizards, and ultimately decide the fate of the wizarding world.”

Hogwarts Legacy

I’ll probably get this for the kids as they have been watching the movies lately.

Was/am a fan of the IP, and given it’s looking to be an open world RPG (one of my favorite genres of games) I’ll likely be picking this one up.

Hogwarts Legacy delayed into 2022

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Avalanche Software have announced that Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed into 2022.

In a very brief statement posted on Twitter, the Hogwarts Legacy team said, “Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us, so we are giving the game the time it needs.”

Hogwarts Legacy was announced during Sony’s PS5 showcase and was slated for a 2021 release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC. The game is set in the 1800s, long before Mr Potter and the gang showed up. You play as a student of Hogwarts who “holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.” You’ll explore the iconic Hogwarts castle, take part in lessons, discover fantastic beasts, and customise your own character in the single-player action-RPG.

Hogwarts Legacy will now launch in 2022.

Hogwarts Legacy to share over 14 minutes of gameplay

We’ll get to see over 14 minutes of Hogwarts Legacy gameplay later this week on March 17th in a dedicated State of Play event.

Hogwarts Legacy

Later this week, we’ll get a PlayStation State of Play event that revolves entirely around Hogwarts Legacy. According to WB Games Avalanche community manager Chandler Wood, “The show will run for about 20 minutes, featuring over 14 minutes of Hogwarts Legacy gameplay captured on PS5, and concluding with some insight from a few members of the team at Avalanche Software who are bringing the Wizarding World to life.” It will be the first in-depth look we’ve had at the game since it was announced.

The State of Play event will take place on Thursday, March 17th, at 2pm PT/5pm ET/9pm GMT/10pm CET

A State of Play event gave us over 14 minutes of Hogwarts Legacy gameplay which showed off the castle, combat, customisation, and more, while also confirming a holiday 2022 release window.

We saw a glimpse of everything — the classes we’ll be taking, how we’ll customise our character, and more. We’ll be able to explore not just the castle but the surrounding grounds, even so far, according to game director Alan Tew, as to see “what lies around and beyond the Black Lake, to meet new witches and wizards in the dwellings that dot the landscape beyond Hogsmeade and learn what other undiscovered chambers lie within Hogwarts or scattered across the Scottish Highlands.”

Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the 1800s. We arrive late to Hogwarts, and start out as a fifth-year, choosing our house and customising our character. We’ll take classes such as Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, and Potions, but will also sneak around the castle too, avoiding Peeves and exploring secrets.

The gameplay gave us a look at combat, and told us that we’ll be able to change it up to suit our playstyle. Wizarding plants and creatures also look to play a big role, and it seems we’ll be able to use the Room of Requirement as some sort of base. Our character will be able to use an “ancient magic,” and this sets us up against some of the antagonists of the game — the dark wizard Victor Rookwood, and Ranrok’s goblin rebellion.

Hogwarts Legacy’s release date is officially confirmed as February 10, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC players.

Unfortunately, the game has been delayed for the PS4 and Xbox One and will be arriving on April 4, 2023.

Within the same announcement, the devs also revealed the release date for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which is set for July 25, 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy gameplay details

Hogwarts Legacy spells

Prior to the massive gameplay reveal trailer, developers Avalanche Software teased that the game would take place in the 1800s. According to the devs this was a conscious decision to prevent your wizarding story to be overshadowed by a certain modern-day wizarding hero.

As the protagonist, your character will be tasked with investigating a goblin-led rebellion. The goblins have allied with dark wizards and you’ll have to take on some dangerous foes along the way. Hogwarts Legacy will allow you to explore Hogwarts’ massive grounds as well as many surrounding areas.

Wizard character customization

Hogwarts Legacy customization

Players will have the opportunity to fully customize their character for this grand adventure. Once you’ve created your character, you’ll arrive at Hogwarts as a new student. Naturally, this means the Sorting Hat will place you in one of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Life as a Hogwarts student

Hogwarts students in potions class

Once you’ve been placed in a Hogwarts house, you’ll have access to your dorms and begin to attend classes. From Potions to Defense Against the Dark Arts you’ll attempt to hone your wizarding skills all while making new friends along the way.

As a student, you’ll be able to create bonds with classmates that could prove valuable in learning new skills later in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy RPG elements

Hogwarts Legacy upgrades

As you attempt to tackle the dark secrets that await you outside of the castle, you’ll certainly grow as a wizard. You’ll be able to upgrade your talents and abilities with the experience points you’ve earned from completing challenges.

Players will also be able to upgrade their catalog of spells making them more effective and powerful as they progress through the game.

In Hogwarts Legacy, combat between wizards will include the use of offensive and defensive spells but that’s not all. Players can also brew powerful potions to give them an advantage when facing enemies.

Hogwarts Legacy reveal trailer

As well as the reveal trailer, Avalanche Software have also brought two gameplay showcase trailers leading up to the release date.

The latest gameplay showcase was released on December 14, 2022. The nearly 35-minute trailer showcased the most in-depth look at Hogwarts Legacy yet. The trailer unveils several key aspects of the game, including broom flight, traversal, combat, and more.

When is Hogwarts Legacy set?

In contrast to the existing Harry Potter source material, Hogwarts Legacy will take place in the 1800s, over a hundred years before the books and films. So you won’t be seeing star names like Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Severus Snape, and Draco Malfoy.

Which real Harry Potter characters are in Hogwarts Legacy?

However, due to the knowledge of ancestral roots and information taken from existing gameplay, several names and faces have been spotted ahead of the game’s full release:

  • Hector Weasley
  • Nearly Headless Nick
  • Peeves
  • Professor Cuthbert Binns
  • Professor Phineas Nigellus Black
  • The Fat Lady
  • Victor Rookwood

As you can see from the likes of Hector Weasley, we can maybe expect to see a few students that will eventually tie into the later years that fans are more familiar with.

The Phantom faces of Peeves and Nearly Headless Nick will make players feel right at home, so we’ll just have to wait and see if Hogwarts Legacy has any surprises up its sleeve.

Hogwarts Legacy has flying broomsticks that you can use to soar across the sky while you travel between all of these places. We’ll be sure to update this piece as more locations are revealed.

How to transfer House & wand selection choice to Hogwarts Legacy

Here’s a guide to picking your House and wand in Hogwarts Legacy prior to its February 10 release date:

  1. Log in to your Wizarding World account. If you don’t have one yet, create a new account.
  2. Complete the Wand Ceremony and Sorting Ceremony quizzes. Once complete, click the copy button to receive an 8-digit code.
  3. Head over to the WB Games website and log in to your existing account or make a new one.
  4. Once logged in, the website will prompt you to paste your 8-digit code. Doing so will link your Wizarding World account data to your Warner Bros. Game account, which will then appear in Hogwarts Legacy.

If you follow these steps, you’ll have your House and wand picked out before embarking on your Hogwarts Legacy journey on February 10. For more details on the linking process, you can check out the dedicated Hogwarts Legacy blog.

It’s important to note that you don’t have to select your Hogwarts House early, as players will still get the chance to do so in-game. The sorting hat will appear in Hogwarts Legacy, allowing you to decide the House you’ll belong to.

However, those who do decide to make the choice prior to release will receive a Beaked Skull Mask and a House Fan-atic School Robe as rewards for linking accounts.

Thanks for that. I’ve now got my accounts linked. I am House Hufflepuff, Alder wood with a unicorn core 14 ½" and hard flexibility, and Wild Boar patronus.

EDT: Updated full description of wand. I am also wondering if it is unicorn penis for the core. All sparkly!
