Petition to Add Shaggy to Mortal Kombat 11 is Blowing Up

When one thinks of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo , they usually think of cowardice, over-sized sandwiches, and solving mysteries. However, the Internet has decided to transform Shaggy’s image from that of a 60s-era hippie with the munchies and a talking dog to that of an unstoppable, God-like being whose power level dwarfs that of Thanos or even the One Punch Man, Saitama. This new take on Shaggy can be found all over the Internet in the form of near-endless memes, and because of his newfound popularity, some are calling for the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon character to be added to Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC character.

The parody site WokenNews has created a Change.org petition to add Shaggy to Mortal Kombat 11 . It seems obvious that the petition was made as a joke, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming quite popular since it was added to the site just seven hours ago. At the time of writing, the petition has just passed 1,500 signatures, with new signatures added almost every second. People seem to be signing the petition faster than the counter can even accurately keep up with it.

So is there a chance Shaggy could be added to Mortal Kombat 11 ? Considering the franchise’s extremely high level of violence and gore, the answer is almost certainly not, regardless of how many people sign the petition. However, Warner Bros. does have the rights to the Scooby-Doo franchise, so it’s technically within the realm of possibility.

While Shaggy from Scooby-Doo likely won’t be part of the Mortal Kombat 11 roster, that doesn’t mean the game will be devoid of guest characters. It’s likely that its post-launch DLC plans will include a number of guest fighters from all sorts of mediums, as we’ve seen from past Mortal Kombat games. We’ve already had the comic book character Spawn teased (though not confirmed), and more guest characters are expected to be announced as we near the game’s April release.

And besides guest fighters, Mortal Kombat 11 is set to include many original characters, ranging from franchise veterans like Scorpion to newcomers like Geras. So even without Shaggy on the roster, it seems Mortal Kombat 11 fans will still have plenty of fighters to choose from when the game launches this April.

Ever since its official unveiling a few weeks ago, speculation has been running wild as to which “guest” characters would be appearing in the forthcoming Mortal Kombat 11 . And the sky’s the limit considering that Mortal Kombat XL was the home to various horror heroes like Friday the 13th ’s Jason Voorhees and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ s Leatherface. But then something interesting happened: a fan created a petition to bring Scooby-Doo ’s Shaggy into the fray, and it’s suddenly getting some huge traction from fellow fans. And now it’s gotten so big that Ed Boon, NetherRealm Studios creative director, has addressed the matter.

That’s not to say it’s an official confirmation or anything, but his response is interesting, to say the least. Earlier today, when a fan reached out to Boon on Twitter with the statement, “We want Shaggy,” he responded in kind:

Let me know how that works out for you…

But then he decided to have some fun with the idea, as he found a drawing and decided to share it on the social media channel, featuring Shaggy with light-up eyes. You can see that tweet below:

But there is one particular response that’s gotten the most attention, and that’s from the man who portrayed Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo movies, Matthew Lillard. He even gave props to the artist that brought “spiritual Shaggy” to life, Raiko.

Indeed, it’s pretty surreal to see. But does that mean Shaggy stands a “ghost” of a chance of getting into the game? It’s still too soon to tell.
