Rocket League goes free-to-play next week

Developer Psyonix has announced that Rocket League will officially go free-to-play next week on September 23rd.

According to an Xbox Wire post, an update is set to roll out tomorrow for all current owners that will make Rocket League “feel like a whole new experience.” This update includes a revamp to the tournament system, where you’ll soon be able to join automatically scheduled Competitive Tournaments for no cost. These tournaments are only 3v3, but teams of any size can join. Your team will be entered into a bracket with 32 teams who are similar in rank, and you’ll earn Tournament Credits based on where you finish. Competitive Tournaments will be available when free-to-play launches on September 23rd.

When free-to-play goes live, Challenges will be introduced. Challenges allow you to unlock free customisation items or XP weekly, during events, and throughout a Season. All players will get three new Challenges per week, while Rocket Pass Premium users will receive six. Rocket League will also get cross-platform progression as of tomorrow. When the update drops, you’ll need to sign in to your Epic Games account and link the platforms where you play Rocket League and choose your primary platform with the highest Rank and XP Level. A linking page will go live tomorrow in Rocket League.

More competitive ranks are coming to Rocket League too. Grand Champion is being split into Grand Champion I, Grand Champion 2, and Grand Champion 3, with the new highest rank being Supersonic Legend.
