SEGA Mega Drive Classics Announced

SEGA has announced SEGA Mega Drive Classics — or SEGA Genesis Classics if you’re from North America — a compilation of more than 50 '90s SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis games. The official announcement comes after the company accidentally spoiled the news of the collection last night by posting a trailer, which was promptly deleted. Oops.

Although we don’t yet have the full list of games in the package, SEGA promises “arcade action, shooters, beat’m ups, puzzlers, old favorites and hidden gems.” Of course, you can already get a glimpse of some of the guaranteed inclusions in the above trailer, even if some of them are obvious (of course Sonic will be there). The collection boasts “online multiplayer, achievements, mirror modes, rewind and save states,” although the specific details for each game included have not yet been released.

If you’re wondering how SEGA Mega Drive Classics will stack up to SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection from the Xbox 360, the current gen version advertises “more than 50” games while last gen’s advertised “more than 40.” Based on this information, we can expect to see at least a few games which weren’t present on the Xbox 360 version.

Physical versions will be available soon to pre-order and will include “a double sided Golden Axe and Streets of Rage poster, identical to the ones you will see in the game’s '90s inspired retro gamer’s bedroom, the hub through which players can access the entire collection.” Details on digital pre-orders will be revealed soon.

SEGA Mega Drive Classics already has an Xbox One release date of May 29th.
