OK, so after some trial and error, it appears that if you join a lobby before starting a game, you can connect. If you join after the game is in progress you will probably get an error.

I’ve created a pinned thread for Loot Lemon, an online resource to help you plan out a build and share build with others. It works for all Borderlands titles so I pinned it in the Borderlands subcategory for better visibility.
