Unlike Xbox Series X, PS5 isn't fully backwards compatible with previous gen controllers

Earlier today, Sony announced that its PlayStation 4 controller — the DualShock 4 — would not be compatible with PlayStation 5 games when the next-gen console launches later this year. Xbox has wasted no time in reminding consumers that Xbox One controllers will work with the upcoming Xbox Series X.

In a tweet that seemingly takes a jab at Sony after today’s announcement, Xbox UK said, “Xbox Series X is backwards compatible with ALL Xbox One controllers across ALL games.” Official Xbox controllers, Xbox Elite, Scuf and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, will all work with the Xbox Series X.

According to Sony, PS4 DualShock controllers can’t be used to play PS5 games, with the company saying, “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.” The DualShock 4 can, however, be used for “supported PS4 games”.

This is unlike Microsoft’s approach with the Xbox Series X and backwards compatibility. Not only will nearly all of the Xbox One library be playable on the Xbox Series X at launch, but gamers will also be able to use their Xbox One controllers on the next-gen console — ultimately saving them from buying further pads. However, it could also be argued that Sony is packing more tech into its DualSense controller and that Microsoft hasn’t moved forward with its controller design.

The Xbox Series X wireless controller was announced back in March, and it sports a new D-pad design and share button.

Thank goodness Sony will include a PS5 controller in the box.
